Shell Stitch 6-inch Block

Chain 23 for the foundation chain.

 

Row 1:  In the second chain from the hook, sc to the end.  Chain 3, turn.


Row 2: Work 3 double crochets in the 1st single crochet. *Skip 2 chains. Single crochet in the next st. Skip 2 sts, then work 5 double crochets in the next (3rd) st.* (You've created your first shell.) Repeat the sequence of stitches between the asterisks (*) across the row, ending with skipping 2 sts. and 1 single crochet in the last st. Chain 3 and turn.


Row 3: Work 3 double crochets in the 1st single crochet. *Work 1 single crochet in the center double crochet of the next shell, (it will be the third double crochet from the row below.)  Work 5 double crochets in the next single crochet, (from the row below)* Repeat the sequence of stitches between the asterisks (*). End with 1 single crochet on top of the turning chain.  (This will be the last stitch on the row.) Chain 3 and turn your work.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 6".

Fasten off.

 

Note:  At the end of each row you can chain 2 or 3.  With the first stitch being a double crochet, either number will work.
